On January 18, 2024, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Built Environment Association organized a scientific conference "Green infrastructure for sustainable urban development", with the participation of leaders of the Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction); managers, experts, scientists, and students of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.

The conference was organized to synthesize opinions and recommendations of scientists related to the development and application of technical solutions and advanced technology in the construction and operation of green buildings and green and smart cities in Vietnam.

Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung spoke at the conference

Speaking to open the conference, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung - Chairman of the Vietnam Built Environment Association said that in recent times, the Politburo, the Government, and the Prime Minister have issued many policies to promote the application of science and technology, promoting green growth and development in Vietnam, including Decision 950/QD-TTg approving the Project for sustainable smart urban development in Vietnam for the period 2018-2025, orientation to 2030; Decision No. 882/QD-TTg approving the National Action Plan on green growth for the period 2021-2030; Decision No. 1658/QD-TTg approving the national strategy on green growth for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

With the drastic direction of the Government, the Prime Minister, Central Ministries, all localities focus on building and promulgating action plans and specific solutions to meet sustainable development needs, green growth, emission reduction. In addition, the development and application of information technology in executive management, production organization, digital transformation in banking, commercial transactions, urban transportation and smart cities are deployed and initially achieved encouraging results.

However, developing green urban areas and smart cities in Vietnam today still faced many challenges such as environmental pollution, traffic congestion, urban flooding, and the risk of fire and explosion. In addition, lack of investment attraction and implementing technological and technical solutions in the design, planning, construction, and operation of urban infrastructure and ecological systems in a green direction, reducing emissions, responding to climate change are also berriers to sustainable urban development. In that context, green infrastructure development is an urgent requirement to improve the efficiency of socio-economic development, attract investment and serve as a foundation for sustainable urban-rural development.

Experts made presentations at the conference

At the conference, experts and scientists discussed on remaining issues to find practical solutions for planning and management of construction and renovation activities in order to contribute to promoting Vietnamese urban areas toward a green, smart and sustainable direction.

Speaking at the conference, Associate Professor, PhD. Nguyen Hong Tien - former Director of the Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction) commented that Vietnam needs to pay more attention to the building and promulgation of mechanisms and policies to develop green and smart infrastructure systems: review, adjust and supplement standards on urban planning and technical infrastructure works, planning related to green infrastructure, green infrastructure design standards; build and improve policies to develop green transport infrastructure; continue to pilot the application of sustainable drainage models; deploy digital transformation and applying science and technology in smart lighting and energy saving.

Overview the conference

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung respectfully acknowledged the valuable comments of delegates and said that the Organizing Committee would fully synthesize the comments and send them to the Ministry of Construction and state management agencies as a reference in the process of advising, developing and promulgating legal policy documents related to the development and application of technical solutions and advanced technology in the construction and operation of green buildings.
